Young Programmers Await Swift Career

Companies pay huge money for their training

A lack of programmers has turned programming into one of the most lucrative professions. Even fresh university graduates are in demand. Companies try to attract promising programmers not only by above-standard pay and special benefit options, but also by a swift career. IT companies invest in programmers’ training hundreds of thousands of crowns. Training and professional certification are therefore increasingly sought after as a popular part of the benefits package.
The rapid growth of the Czech IT market, which according to analysts* increases 8.5 percent annually, turns programming into a very sought-after profession. "All professions directly involved in software development are in demand – not just software developers, but also software consultants or analysts, for example," said Olga Svobodová , HR Director at S&T CZ. System integrator S&T CZ has been recording a strong demand for programmers specialised in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Business Intelligence.

Applicants say good career prospects are more important than salary

In the experience of S&T CZ programmer applicants mainly appreciate the prospect of professional development as it increases their value on the job market. "Programmers put training and certification at the top of the company benefits list. Although salary remains important programmers give more weight to interesting projects and professional growth," Olga Svobodová said. IT companies also pamper their employees with additional benefits such as sport and cultural activities or financial benefits in the form of supplementary pension insurance or lucrative loans for employees.

Training a programmer costs hundreds of thousands of crowns

It is not just experienced professionals but also fresh university graduates who benefit from the shortage of programmers. New recruits can usually expect promising career prospects on top of their above-average starting salary and generous company benefits. Companies also need to continuously invest millions of crowns into educating their programmers to ensure they keep up with the pace of technological development. "Depending on the level of specialisation it would, on average, cost a company CZK 100-200 thousand to obtain a certification for Business Intelligence. When it comes to SAP systems the amount is slightly lower. Other investments concern improving programmers' language abilities," added Olga Svobodová, HR Director of S&T CZ.

According to S&T the ideal amount of money invested into staff training should be somewhere between 1.8 and 3 percent of the company’s annual total salary expenses. Only then it is possible to maintain in the long run a high standard of services.
